Volunteer
The Friends of the Cape Cod National Seashore has a dedicated group of volunteers who work with Cape Cod National Seashore staff on various programs and projects. If you are interested in any of the areas outlined below, we can always use more hands and would welcome your participation.
GENERAL VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
Trail Maintenance - The adopt-a-trail program asks that individuals, couples, or small groups walk one trail on a regular basis, providing basic maintenance such as lopping, clipping, and clearing, and reporting more significant maintenance issues to the Park Trail Maintenance Team. The Friends also has occasional group work days in which volunteers are asked to join us on a group trail project.
Cut/Pile Crew - This team of volunteers--affectionately called the "Woodchucks"--use loppers, pruners and handsaws to maintain or remove unwanted vegetation near critical park infrastructure and public areas. Supervised by park staff, objectives include forest fire prevention, invasive plant removal, and vista management. Tools, personal protective equipment, and training are provided by park staff. Due to park staffing levels, the Woodchucks are on temporary hiatus. Once staffing levels are increased, the Woodchucks will be reactivated. If interested in joining this eager team of volunteers, please indicate interest in the "tell us about yourself" box. You will be contacted about the group’s plans.
Program Greeters - Volunteers greet people at Salt Pond Visitor Center. There are opportunities to greet at summer evening programs late-June through August, in January and February for the Winter Film Series, or at events at other times of year for Friends-sponsored programs. Hand out literature and represent the organization.
Native Gardens - Calling all gardeners! Learn about common native plants on the Cape while raking, pruning, and weeding the planting beds at various park locations on a recurring basis with the direction of park staff.
Occasional Opportunities
There are generally two annual Saturday projects that involve just a few hours of volunteer time. In April, Earth Day is celebrated with beach clean-ups at selected areas in the park co-sponsored with the Center for Coastal Studies in Provincetown. In September, we participate in the National Park Service-wide Public Lands Day by helping with planting or maintenance projects in conjunction with park personnel. At other times we respond to National Seashore needs as requested.
