Sharon Dunn – An Island in Time

  • Salt Pond Visitor Center 50 Nauset Road Eastham, MA 02642 (map)

Come with Sharon Dunn as she takes you on a journey to Wellfleet's Bound Brook Island, a rural paradise secluded in the Cape Cod National Seashore. It's one square mile rich with history--native Punonakanits, Pilgrims, sea captains, shore whaling, religious revival meetings, salt works, and an island-born entrepreneur who first brought bananas from Jamaica to the US. The island holds secrets in the silence of the present. Why is it called an island when it isn't? Why did its thriving community of 150 inhabitants in 1850 dwindle to none by 1910? Why do photos from the early 1900s show a landscape bare of vegetation? Antique maps and photographs as well as her own maps, photographs and poems, illustrate her talk which ends with the twenty-first century's summer people and Bound Brook Island's challenges in a warming world.  Indoor program.
